The Victorian era began in 1837 with the succession of Alexandrina Victoria and ended with her death in 1901 which was the longest reign of any British monarch at that time. This era is commonly characterized by rise of the middle class, rigid social expectations, expansion of overseas colonies, and the substantial rise of women in literature. In a work deemed by many to be Gilman’s magnum opus, an unnamed female narrator is slowly driven insane as she is forced to spend her time locked in a room where the only source of stimulation is the ugly yellow patterns that coat the wall. The short story begins with the narrator and her educated husband, John, moving into their home for the summer. It is quickly revealed that the narrator suffers from a â€Å"nervous depression† that was common of women in this period and that she and her husband seem to be cut from two different cloths. Where the narrator is portrayed as lively, imaginative, and naà ¯ve, John is shown to be rigid, intellectual, and rational. It is John (in his unending wisdom, thoughtfulness, and compassion) that prescribes the hellish and ultimately disastrous summer with no activity, physical or otherwise. The narrator mentions that she is not allowed to engage in any physical activity, reading, and writing. Overall, for a reader, this code of ethics is easy to read and understand but on the other hand, it lacks the well stated policies and procedures regarding ethical issues which Boeing might come across in future. For those who have to actually act upon this code of ethics, very little guidance has been provided in the draft. This article aims to highlight some of the shortcomings of code of ethics for Boeing Company and accordingly followed by some recommendations which can help Boeing company design a better code of ethics which would be beneficial for the company, its major stakeholders and other readers for variety of purposes. Shortcomings of Code of Ethics The major area of concern for the Audit Committee of the Boeing Company, of which a single hint is not even provided in the code of ethics, is fraud. Imagine a company of such exposure, having no clue about fraud and fraudulent practices in its code of ethics, making the company more susceptible to fraud. Boeing Company should reassess its code of ethics for the inclusion of various aspects regarding fraud which has its deep roots in different areas of business. It is advised to the Audit Committee of Boeing Company to design such a mechanism which ensures that appropriate course of action can be opted in case when a fraud is highlighted. Efforts should be applied consistently to prevent, detect and deter the possibilities of fraud no matter at which stage it exists. Recommendations The Audit Committee should establish strategies to confront with fraudulent practices while remaining within its current framework of code of ethics which is divided into three broad areas. The upcoming discussion focuses upon the establishment of strategies to combat with fraudulent practices in each individual area which Boeing Company has classified. Board The Board of Directors of Boeing Company needs to realize the intensity of risks associated with frauds. The Board should take measures to introduce a culture based on honesty, integrity and ethical practices. The code of ethics should include clauses which signify how Board should respond to reinforce fraud-free culture in the company. Those clauses should highlight management responsibility of dealing with frauds, the oversight of Audit Committee towards fraudulent practices and establishment of such culture which should not give rise to attempt any fraudulent practices. Employees The code of ethics should contain clauses in which the responsibility of employees should be highlighted to confront with fraudulent practices. Policies should be highlighted in such a way that they should minimize the risks associated with frauds. The consequences of committing fraud and when detected, those who adjudicated to be held responsible for commitment of frauds, should be very well focused in the code of ethics, so that in future, employees should abstain themselves in involving any unethical practice in this regards. Finance The finance department should incorporate those strategies which mitigate the likelihood of fraud in the financial practices. Those fraudulent practices can take various forms such as fraudulent reporting, misappropriation of assets, embezzlement of receipts etc. Therefore, the Audit Committee should encompass relevant strategies in the code of ethics to confront with such fraudulent practices in relation to financial frameworks of Boeing Company. International Business Machines Essay Ibm International Business Machine is an American computer manufacturer, with headquarters in Armonk, New York. The company is a major supplier of information-processing products and systems, software, communications systems, workstations, and related supplies and services in the United States and around the world. Its products are used in a wide variety of industries, including business, government, science, defense, education, medicine, and space exploration. The company was incorporated in 1911 as Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company in a merger of three smaller companies. After further acquisitions, it absorbed the International Business Machines Essay Corporation in 1924 and assumed that companys name. Thomas Watson arrived that same year and began to build the floundering company into an industrial giant. IBM soon became the countrys largest manufacturer of time clocks and developed and marketed the first electric typewriter. In 1951 the company entered the computer field. The development of IBMs technology was largely funded by contracts with the U.S. governments Atomic Energy Commission; close parallels existed between products made for government use and those introduced by IBM into the public marketplace. In the late 1950s IBM distinguished itself with two innovations: the concept of a family of computers (its 360 family) in which the same software could be run across the entire family and a corporate policy dictating that no customer would be allowed to fail in implementing an IBM system. This policy spawned enormous loyalty to Big Blue, as IBM came to be called. From the 1960s until the 1980s IBM dominated the global mainframe market, although in the 1980s IBM lost market share to other manufacturers in specialty areas such as high-performance computing. When minicomputers were introduced in the 1970s IBM viewed them as a threat to the mainframe market and failed to recognize their potential, opening the door for such competitors as Digital Equipment Corporation, Hewlett-Packard, and Data General. In 1981, however, IBM introduced the highly successful IBM PC, which rapidly became a standard in micro computing. The company met with less success defending its market share against lower-cost producers. In the late 1980s IBM was the worlds largest producer of a full line of computers and the leading producer of office equipment, including typewriters and photocopiers. The company was also the largest manufacturer of integrated circuits, all of which were used in its own products. The sale of mainframe computers and related software and peripherals accounted for nearly half of IBMs business and about 70 to 80 percent of its profits. In the early 1990s, amid a recession in the U.S. economy, IBM reorganized itself into autonomous business units more closely aligned to the companys markets. As a result, 40,000 employees lost their jobs in 1992, and more cuts were announced for 1993. After record losses during 1992 and, for the first time in IBMs history, a cut in stock dividends (to less than half of their previous value), John F. Akers, chairman since 1985, resigned in early 1993. Louis V. Gerstner, Jr., was named chairperson of the company in April 1993. In 1994 IBM sold its federal systems unit to, which provides computer systems and services to the government, to Loral for $1.5 billion. That same year, in a challenge to Intels dominance of the microprocessor business, IBM agreed to manufacture computer chips designed by Cyrix. Several of IBMs highest- ranking executives including chief strategist James Cannavino, left the company in 1995 as Gerstner continued to clean house. Also that year Apple released its first Power Mac computer that use the PowerPC chip developed by Apple, IBM, and Motorola. Mood disorders are characterized by disturbances in a person?s mood or their prolonged emotional state. Most people have a wide emotional range, they are capable of being happy or sad, animated or quiet, cheerful or discouraged, overjoyed or miserable, and it just depends on the circumstances. People with mood disorders, their range are greatly restricted. They will seem stuck at one or the other end of the emotional spectrum, either constantly happy and excited or constantly sad no matter what the circumstances. Depression is a well known mood disorder and very common. A person who is depressed will experience a state in which they feel overwhelmed with sadness, they lose interest in activities, and they will display other symptoms such as excessive guilt or feelings of worthlessness. How does one know when feelings of sadness and hopelessness are just normal feelings and reactions to a person?s circumstances or are they experiencing a form of depression.Clinicians look for some significant impairment of distress in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. Doctors also look for other explanations of the symptoms; could they be due to substance abuse or the side effects of medication that the person may be taking. Could it be a result of a medical condition, such as hypothyroidism which is the inability of the thyroid gland to produce an adequate amount of its hormones? Could the hormones be due to an intense grief reaction? If the symptoms cannot be explained by any of the above causes then the clinician uses a test called the DSM-IV-RT to help make a diagnosis of depression. DSM-IV-RT notes at least five of the fallowing symptoms and at least one of the first two must be present within the patient: 1.Depressed Mood- Feel sad or empty for most of the day, almost every day, or have others observed these symptoms? 2.Loss of interest in pleasure- lost interest in performing normal activities, such as working or going to social events? Does the person seem to just be going through the motions of everyday life and not receiving any pleasure from it? 3.Significant weight loss or gain- Has the person gained or lost more than five percent of body weight in a month? Has the person lost interest in eating or is complaining that food has lost its taste? 4.Sleep disturbance- Is the person having trouble sleeping? Or is the person sleeping too much? 5.Disturbance in motor activities- Is there a change in activity level? Does the person just sit around? Or does the behavior reflect agitation or unusual restlessness? 6.Fatigue- Does the person complain about constantly being tired and having no energy? 7.Feeling worthlessness or excessive guilt- Does the person express feeling like; ?You are better off without me? or ?I ruin everything for everyone I love.? 8.Unable to concentrate- Complain of memory problems or they are unable to focus their attention on simple tasks. 9.Thoughts of death- Does the person talk about committing suicide or wish that they were dead. Appropriate diagnosis is the first step in effective treatment. Second step is therapeutic help for the individual. Behavioral therapies would be most effective since its therapeutic approaches that are based on the belief that all behavior, normal and abnormal, is learned, and that the objective of therapy is to teach people new, more satisfying ways of behaving. Insight therapy would be affective also. Insight therapy is to give people a better awareness and understanding of their feelings, motivations, and actions in hope that this will lead to better adjustment. Family therapy would also be necessary for those who are experiencing depression who have a family. Family therapists believe that it is a mistake to treat a client in a vacuum, making no attempt to meet the person?s parents, spouse, and children, for if one person in the family is having problems, it is often a signal that the entire family needs assistance. I would also recommend couples therapy for those who are in a relationship. Couples therapy is designed to assist partners who are having difficulties within their relationship. If it is vital to encourage involvement from a silent member, there are a number of techniques to accomplish this (Longo, 2010). A particular technique is to ask the member open-ended questions or those requiring an opinion or details. Another technique is to provide cues of expectations to the silent member about his/her involvement in discussion of topics to which s/he appears largely interested in.
